The central province of Quang Ngai inaugurated an anchorage on June 14 as part of a 208 billion VND project funded by the Australian government to help mitigate natural disasters’ devastating impacts
The Tinh Hoa anchorage, located in Son Tinh district, was built at a total cost of 39 billion VND, of which more than 27 billion VND were provided as non-refundable aid by the Australian Government.
The facility is capable of providing a storm-shelter for around 350 fishing boats and related services.
Addressing the inaugurating ceremony, Australian management contractor representative Tom Connor said the anchorage is a symbolic work in mitigating negative impacts of natural calamities in Asia .
He stressed that the project to lessen consequences of natural disasters in Quang Ngai received two highest awards of Australia , including a technical prize of Queensland State and a national prize for excellent technical consultancy.
According to Australian Ambassador to Vietnam Bill Tweddell, the Australian Government will provide 9.85 million AUD in aid for Vietnam in support of poverty reduction in Quang Ngai during the 2008-11 period.
The project will benefit around 26,000 poor households in the province and targets to reduce the poverty rate of local ethnic minority groups to below 30 percent by 2010.
Quang Ngai seeks ‘special economic zone’ status for Dung Quat
January 16, 2009
Quang Ngai Province has petitioned the central government to upgrade the Dung Quat Economic Zone into a special economic zone, said Le Quang Thich, Office Manager of the provincial People’s Committee.
According to the request, Dung Quat will be expanded southward by 5,000 hectares to include Be Island and Ly Son District. A high-level service area will be established on Be Island.
The zone’s expansion must be implemented by the end of this year to provide space for big projects financed by foreign and local investors, Mr. Thich said.
As of mid-March, 144 projects worth US$10.5 billion have registered to invest in Dung Quat, according to a report by the economic zone’s management board.
At least 95 of these have received licenses. Major projects include a US$2.5-billion oil refinery invested by the Viet Nam Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam) and a US$3-billion steel project financed the Tycoons Worldwide Steel Company.
Other projects include a shipyard built by Vinashin at a cost of almost US$400 million, a US$260-million plant built by the Doosan-Viet Nam Heavy Industry Ltd. Co., and a polypropylene factory built by PetroVietnam at a cost of US$200 million.
Another 49 projects have obtained approval for investment from either the government or the economic zone’s management board.
Some 43 projects providing jobs for over 10,000 workers are already in operation. Two-thirds of the workers are local residents. In addition, about 22,000 workers from other areas are working in the economic zone.
By 2010, the zone will need some 31,000 workers for various industries, according to Tran Le Trung, the management board head.
To meet the demand for skilled workers, provincial People’s Committee Chairman Nguyen Xuan Hue has approved a program of vocational training and labor supply for 2008-2010. Over VND212 billion has been budgeted to train 29,000 skilled workers.
Cham ethnic people’s relic found in Quang Ngai
January 16, 2009
A Cham ethnic brick kiln dating back to the 8th-9th century has been found in the central province of Quang Ngai by archaeologists from a local museum.
Archaeologist Doan Ngoc Khoi from the Quang Ngai Museum said the 3m-long and 2m-wide kiln is located at the centre of the Cham’s Chau Sa citadel, found in early 20th century by French architect Henri Parmentier – who had involved in repairing and restoring various Cham towers in Vietnam .
Khoi said the discovery of the kiln with wasted bricks inside suggests that the existing Cham towers in Viet Nam had been built with baked bricks instead of the current theory that they were built with unbaked bricks and then burnt.
The Quang Ngai Museum is asking for permission from the provincial People’s Committee and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to further excavate the archaeological site.
